Test Wi-Fi speed between two phones
The link between the handsets, not the internet.
Pingo measures the Wi-Fi speed between two phones rather than the speed of your internet connection. Both phones need Pingo, both need to be on the same Wi-Fi, and there is no discovery step: one phone hosts, and you type its address on the other. The host then sends data for about eight seconds.
The test runs in one direction only, from the host to the joiner, and only the joiner ever sees a figure. The host tells you as much when it finishes.
Steps in Pingo
- Install Pingo on both phones and join both to the same Wi-Fi.
- On the first phone open the Tools tab, then the Analyze group, then Phone-to-phone speed. The screen itself is titled Phone to phone.
- Tap Host the test. The phone reads This phone is hosting and shows its address under Enter this IP on the other phone.
- On the second phone open the same tool, type that address into the Host phone’s IP field, and tap Join a test.
- The host sends test data for about eight seconds, then reads Sent. The result is on the other phone.
- On the second phone, read the figure in Mb/s under the card labelled Between the two phones.
When there is no figure
A transfer that moved nothing is not reported as 0 Mb/s. It hatches instead, and says the connection closed without transferring anything, so there is no speed to measure, and to start the host again and rejoin. If Android will not give the hosting phone a usable address, the address slot reads IP NOT AVAILABLE rather than showing something that would not work.
What Pingo can and cannot tell you here
What it can tell you
- Measure throughput over the Wi-Fi between two handsets, in Mb/s.
- Run for about eight seconds from a host phone to a joining phone.
- Show the result on the joining phone, with the host confirming it sent.
- Say plainly when nothing transferred, rather than printing a zero.
What it cannot
- Find the other phone for you. There is no discovery, no pairing and no code to scan; the address is typed.
- Measure both directions. One run is host to joiner only.
- Show a figure on the hosting phone. The result is on the other one.
- Tell you anything about your internet connection. This is the local link only.
