Guided diagnose

Pick what is wrong. Pingo runs only the checks that fit.

You choose a symptom from a fixed list, and the run answers with one verdict word and one plain sentence, with every check it ran one tap underneath. A check that could not run is named and hatched rather than counted as a pass, so a run where everything that did run passed can still read Partly checked.

Speed in status bar

On by default. It reads this phone’s own byte counters every two seconds and redraws your status bar, so the live down and up rates are there while Pingo is closed. It runs as a foreground service, so Android shows its notification for as long as it is on.

Scan history

Under the Devices tab, below the device list, Pingo keeps the sweeps it has run and a record of when each device was first and last seen. Android hides hardware addresses, so a home record is filed under the names devices report, and Pingo says nothing is new rather than guessing. It sends no alerts.

VLAN isolation test

From the Wi-Fi you are joined to, it opens connections to addresses on other subnets. Reaching one proves the network is not isolated. Reaching none proves only the addresses it tested, because a silent host looks the same as a blocked one, and a run that stops part way gives no verdict at all.

Scan another subnet

Sweeps a private range you name rather than the one this phone sits on: a CIDR, a single address, or a first address to a last address. It sweeps at most 256 addresses in one run, and a public or oversized range is refused rather than quietly trimmed.

iperf3 throughput

Runs the real iperf3 protocol against a server you run yourself, so it measures your LAN, VLAN or VPN rather than the internet. One screen carries both halves, with a Client and Server switch, so the phone can be the far end too. It reports measured throughput only, never an estimate.

Phone to phone

Listed as Phone-to-phone speed. Install Pingo on both phones, put them on the same Wi-Fi, then type the host’s address on the other one. There is no discovery. The host sends for eight seconds in one direction, so only the phone that joined shows a figure.

Domain checks

Four tools, not one. Domain security grade reads SPF, DKIM and DMARC from public DNS and grades each on strength. DNS and WHOIS lookup resolves the records and the registration. IP lookup reports who holds an address. SSL certificate checks a host’s expiry, names and key strength.

Threat protection

The tools page lists this as the Firewall and DNS filtering test. It tests eight kinds of network protection, using published test files rather than your own hosts, and one of them is the closest thing to a firewall test: which outbound ports this network lets through.

Uptime monitor

It pings the hosts you add every twelve seconds and keeps only the history it really measured. Those pings run while Pingo is open and stop when you close it, and nothing is filled in for the gap. It sends no alerts.

Wi-Fi hardening check

Reports what the network this phone is joined to advertises about itself, read from beacons already in the air: security, cipher, frame protection, and whether WPS is advertised. It tests no password and captures no handshake, and it lists what a beacon cannot tell it.

What’s new in 1.0.1.

  • Guided diagnose leads with one word. A run answers with a verdict and one plain sentence. The checks behind it are one tap away, and a check that could not run is never counted as a pass.
  • An honest latency figure. The speed test throws away its first cold request, keeps seven warm samples and reports the median as HTTPS latency, with the spread printed beside it.
  • Bufferbloat refuses to grade what it cannot resolve. A delay rise smaller than the idle spread, or a negative one, is hatched with its reason instead of being handed a letter.
  • Home shows the live downlink against your Wi-Fi link capacity. The capacity is printed under the figure as the rest of the sentence the figure starts, never as a measurement of its own, and it is withheld with its reason when the radio does not report a rate.
  • One naming chain for every list. The Devices tab, the network map and the subnet scanner headline a device exactly the same way, and names resolve live on every scan.
  • Scan any private range. Type a CIDR, a single address, or a first address to a last address. A public or oversized range is refused rather than quietly trimmed.
  • An optional crash log, on the phone only. It is off every time you open Support, it masks addresses and network names before it saves anything, and it reaches us only if you switch it on for one message.
